Why this matters

ADHD research has historically centred male physiology.
Female reproductive hormones and their neurological impact are rarely considered in assessment, treatment, or ongoing care.
Even when studies are undertaken, they focus on oestrogen, largely ignoring the hugely significant role progesterone plays in mood management and nervous system support.

Low progesterone and oestrogen dominance were consistent patterns in the cohort.

During perimenopause ADHD traits tended to be persistent across the cycle,  rather than neatly cyclical as seen in studies on younger women.

Trait flare-ups were observed when progesterone dropped relative to oestrogen.
